How to isolate backing vocals and extract harmonies

Split lead and backing vocals

Lead vocal, backing vocals and instrumental — ready to listen to or download.

To hear a song's harmonies without the lead singer or instruments, split it into lead vocal, backing vocals and instrumental, then download Backing vocals. A standard vocal remover leaves all the singers together in one file.

Hear the original song and all three separated layers

Start with the song, then hear Backing vocals, Instrumental and Lead vocal on their own. The backing layer contains the supporting voices; the lead is the main singer, and the instrumental is the music. These are the same excerpts used on the NiceVois separator page.

This is one example of a split, not a promise that every song will separate equally well. Compare the same excerpt with LALAL.AI and UVR.

Extract the harmonies in three steps

  1. Choose your song under Drop songs in the separator above. You do not need to remove the instrumental first. Use the best source recording you have; converting an MP3 into a WAV does not restore lost detail.
  2. Choose an output format, then press Split lead and backing vocals. WAV or FLAC gives you a lossless working file. Wait for your own result; the examples below the tool are a separate listening demo.
  3. Play Backing vocals, then choose Download beside that stem. Check a chorus and a quieter verse. Choose Lead vocal instead if you want the main line without the background singers.

Background vocals, doubles and ad-libs

Backing vocals describe a role in the arrangement. They may be a different singer, a harmony above the melody, a doubled lead, or a short response between phrases. A harmony extractor can help expose that supporting layer so you can learn the notes, practice your part or work on a remix.

NiceVois separates the lead from the backing layer as a group. It does not give you an individual file for each harmony singer or guarantee that every ad-lib will land in backing vocals. An ad-lib that sits up front like the lead may remain in the lead stem. Close unison doubles, overlapping singers and heavy effects can leave fragments in both files.

If a song has little supporting singing, the backing stem can be very quiet. That does not necessarily mean the split failed. Compare it with the original arrangement and listen to the lead stem as well.

Choose the output for your next step

Keep the untrimmed files when you plan to combine them later. Removing gaps from only one stem changes its timing against the others.

Common questions

Can I isolate backing vocals for free?

NiceVois offers 10 shared free source-audio minutes per rolling 24 hours without an account. The allowance covers both separators, noise removal and reverb removal. A split counts the song's length at its first stem download; the other stems and repeat downloads do not count again. Cleanup counts when processing finishes. Subscribers have unlimited use of those four tools.

Does a vocal remover extract harmonies separately?

A normal vocal remover produces vocals and instrumental. Its vocals file can contain the lead, harmonies and doubles together. Use lead/backing separation when you need the supporting voices on their own.

Can I isolate one harmony from a stack?

This tool produces one backing-vocal stem. It does not separate every note or singer in that stack. Use it to hear the arrangement, then record the individual part yourself if you need a clean, separate performance.
